sounds to me like you have a worn out driveshaft bearing, casuing the shaft to not turn true and eating your sprocket.

How would I be able to tell if the driveshaft bearings are worn out? would the shaft be loose or what?

I did what you said and there doesn't seem to be any bearing damage. I even was able to grab the drive shaft, but there was no movement on either side. I did notice that the shaft moved from side to side alot more than a 1/2 inch I'd say. Should there be that much play and could that be the problem.

ok, it sounds like you may be missing something in your chaincase, there should be a little metal trincket/collar deal behind lower gear, it sounds more to me now that your gears are not aligned properly causing excessive wear, and if that piece is missing behind sprocket it will caused riveshaft to move back and forth, also make sure your chaincase has oil in.

Thanks for all of your help. found the problem. I put the old upper and lower sprockets back on to check the alignment and I noticed that the lower sprocket bearing moved ever so slightly. will the drive shaft come out with out removing the track, and can I replace the lower sprocket with a 40 toother? the old one was a 37 toother.I bought that 40 toother from a place in NY still in the JD package. Thanks again

if you use the 40 tooth gear you will have to add links to the chain.
