I seen this had been read 95 times w/no reply. There is some mention in the general board of painting plastics and I thought it should also be mentioned under restoration tips.?.

have 79 trailfire 340 (silver), needed to find a carb for a spitfire, found an unidentified deere that looked like my trailfire. Looking closer I found it to be a 436. Here is my question.the serial no. is in the 12000 area with an M at the end (12000m),which is right, but nobody I've talked to can say anything about the S in J44SJ it remains unexplained. Is this some different Trailfire 440? (European,American?) P.S. Motor was blown by previous owner last week %$! You can email me with any hints as to it's origin anytime at summerspeed@symp.ca

He J44L means that it is a liquifire. I'm guessing it is black, and the engine plate says TC440A. It is liquid cooled as well? ~Jack

The J44SJ would be a 1980 John Deere Sportfire...the correct engine would be designated TA440B
